An iris flower is usually both male (pollen) and female (lip) ! I will steal the pollen from this one with a pair of tweezers, and preciously store it for later...

After i've stripped the potential girl by removing it's standards and falls ( the organic matter being less on the flower, it will have less tendency to rod in the rain)....
Après avoir déshabillé la future demoiselle en lui enlevant les pétales (moins de matière organique restera sur la fleur, moins elle aura tendance à pourir sous la pluie) ...
... in order to turn Winterland's flower into a real lady ....i take the pollen parts off with a pair of tweezers. This pollen i won't use now, i can throw it away, or keep it to use on another iris.

so, i take a tiny bit of pollen from the blue iris, with the point of a small painting spatula...
alors je prends un petit peu de pollen de l'iris bleu avec la pointe d'une petite spatule de peintre...
... and delicately apply the powder behind the lip, by pulling a little at the back to open it.....the lip should be sticky enough to retain the grains.........................this is so exciting..............( is it not...?)
...et l'applique délicatement derrière la lèvre, en tirant légérement à l'arrière pour bien l'ouvrir...la lèvre devrait être suffisament collante pour retenir les grains de poudre........ .....si ça, c'est pas excitant !..........

Don't forget to write on a label the name of the "mother" and the name of the "father"......or you'll be in trouble to know who is who when you plant the seeds:
Surtout, n'oubliez pas d'indiquer sur une étiquette facile à accrocher le nom du "père" et de la "mère"...sinon vous ne pourrez plus savoir qui est qui au moment de tout planter.

It's the first time in a 100 years that a rhizome iris is registered from the Netherlands ! The last ones date from the times Mr Van Tubergen was touring the world, looking for new species! The company that now uses his name has nothing to do with the creativity and sense of adventure Mr Van Tubergen demonstrated in those days! (I made the mistake to order irises from them once, none were true to name...!)

It's a 2004 cross. i was a total novice then, i don't know what i did, or didn't do, but only one seedling survived the winter and the wet spring, and it was EITJE! Piece of cake! i didn't have to decide who would live and who would die,( which is the name of the game when you hybridize...).
C'est un croisement de 2004. J' étais complètement novice, je ne sais pas ce que j'ai fait, ou pas fait, mais un seul semis a survécu à l'hiver et au printemps humide, et c'était EITJE ! Super facile! Je nai pas eu a décider de qui vivrait ou qui mourrait, (ce qui est la règle du jeu en hybridation...).
EITJE means 'little egg', and that fits the colour range it has, but there is a second meaning to this word in Dutch, it also means 'easy', 'easily done'. So EITJE it was!
EITJE veut dire "Petit Oeuf", ce qui correspond assez bien à ses couleurs, mais ce mot a un deuxième sens en Hollandais, il peut aussi signifier "facile", "facilement fait", "les doigts dans le nez" ! C'était donc le nom parfait!
It's a cross between Inscription and Captive Sun
C'est un croisement entre Inscription et Captive Sun :

As you can see on the pictures, Eitje is a big improvement on Inscription's shape, but not on Captive Sun's, so, what's the point ? Well, Eitje is a stronger plant than Captive Sun, it's beard is thicker, really white and makes a better contrast on the yellow spot, that is darker. It also has a hint of green, that might be useful for hybridizers that are working in this direction.
Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos, Eitje est un gros progrès sur la forme d' Inscription, mais pas de Captive Sun, alors à quoi bon? Et bien, Eitje est une plante bien plus rustique que Captive Sun, sa barbe est plus touffue, vraiment blanche donc faisant un meilleur contraste sur le spot jaune, qui est plus foncé. Il a aussi une nuance un peu verte, ce qui pourrait interesser les hybrideurs explorant cette direction.
Bijtje means 'Little Bee' . I've used it a lot already, there should be some seedlings from it to bloom in 2009!

A speculaas is a brown cookie with cinnamon. My "Speculaas" doesn't have a perfect shape with it's falls a bit too narrow, but the colour is fab ! And it is such a good grower! No rebloom, but i'm sure it has reblooming genes with such parents!
Un speculaas, c'est un biscuit brun à la cannelle. Mon "Speculaas" n'a pas une forme parfaite avec ses pétales un peu étroits, mais quelle couleur ! Pas de remontée, mais je suis sûr qu'avec de tels parents, les gènes sont là!

"Bonte Kermis" means 'colourful fun-fair' and 'garish colours', with it's slightly vulgar connotation, but they can't all be classy beige, can they...!

These have bloomed only once or twice, and have not been pulled out and thrown on the compost pile........because they seem full of promises. But they will have to prove they are great to remain in the garden.
Ceux-ci n'ont fleuri pour l'instant qu'un ou deux printemps, et n'ont pas été arrachés......car ils semblaient plein de promesses. Mais ils devront faire leurs preuves pour ne pas finir en compost.
Over the moon with this one : a (Tetraploid X Diploid) cross ! The dark lines look interesting.
Comblé par ce croisement Tetraploïde X Diploïde ! Les nervures foncées sont intéressantes.

It's a very tiny iris, with very round falls, and bushy orange and blue beards. I'm very proud of it because it's one of Eitje's first children!

I don't think any of them will be introduced (shape wise, the pol parent pulls them too backwards) , but Bright Eyes is a rebloomer, at the base of many existing rebloomers, so these 5 selected siblings have been, and will be used because of the genes they carry, even though they don't rebloom themselves. Thanks to Jazzamatazz, they are a big improvement on Bright Eyes.
Aucun de ceux-ci ne sera certainement enregistré (leur forme ressemble trop à leur vieux 'père'), mais Bright Eye est un remontant, à la base de nombreux remontants, alors ces 5 semis ont été et seront utilisés pour leurs gènes, même s'ils ne remontent pas eux-mêmes. Grace à Jazzamatazz, il sont une véritable amélioration de Bright Eyes.

This iris is very special to me, i didn't buy it, i found it in the dead of winter, on the tomb of two British soldiers who are burried in the cemetery of my home-village, Luc sur Mer, in Normandy. It was covered vith overgrown small irises. I picked one that was not even really planted, growing over the others, a real survivor. It's been in the garden ever since, growing like mad, remembering me of home. Two oddities come to my mind here : how come two British soldiers were lovingly buried in the village with the locals, when two mile saway there is a British Cemetery, devoted to the lads who lost their lives during D-Day. The second is the fact that Iris Albicans was traditionally used in Arabic countries to accompany the dead, without knowing it , this ritual has been respected in my 100% white Catholic village ! I love that.
Cet iris est tès spécial pour moi. Je ne l'ai pas acheté, je l'ai trouvé sur la tombe de deux soldats Anglais qui sont enterrés dans le cimetière de mon village, Luc sur Mer, en Normandie. Elle était couverte d'une multitude d'iris nains. J'en ai ramassé un, qui poussait par dessus les autres, pas mème planté, un vrai 'survivor'. Il pousse maintenant comme un fou dans le jardin, et me rappele la maison. Il y a deux choses bizarres dans cette histoire: tout d'abord, comment deux soldats Anglais ont-ils été enterrés au village avec les gens du cru, alors qu'à trois kms il y a un Cimetière Anglais, où reposent tous les petits gars qui se sont fait descendre en 1944, ensuite, c'es le fait que, comme dans la tradition qui existe dans certains pays Arabes de mettre des iris albicans pour accompagner les morts, sans le savoir, ce rituel a été respecté, et ça, ça me ravit!

Same colour range as "Speculaas", but with a much beter shape! They are 'half brothers', with Romantic Evening as Pol parent, but Calico Cat as a mother has given a great shape! No rebloom, but Calico Cat's father is Miss Nellie, so there are rebloom genes from both sides there too.
Même genre de couleurs que "Speculaas", mais la forme est bien meilleure! Ils sont 'demi-frères' par leur 'père' Romantic Evening, mais Calico Cat comme 'mère' a vraiment amélioré la forme! Pas de remontée, mais le 'père' de Calico Cat est Miss Nellie, donc nous avons des gènes de remontants des deux cotés encore.

I find the ring patern fabulous, but the increase is very slow, so i really wonder if it will ever get to the commercial stage.

I've been daubing What Again's pollen quite a lot in 2006, and i'm quite happy with some of the results, particularly on Hello darkness. Some have rebloomed in the late summer! This one it the prettiest:
